Last month saw the city of Saigon bracing itself for yet another Saigon Saints social event, this being the annual end-of-season awards night held at Jaspas Restaurant on Dong Khoi.

In a somewhat low-key event compared to previous gatherings there were a few suprise nominations, in particular those in the Captains awards. For his services to international relations, Roy the Boy walked away (rather sheepishly) with the Black Beauty (dark horse) award. This years players player award went to Saints El Capitano Scott Lambert for his consistent performances all season and bagging a Lampard-esque tally of goals from midfield.

Although not present to receive his award (having fallen asleep at his computer, frenetic downloading can only be assumed), Warren was voted player of the season by the manager, overcoming an injured arse to put in some outstanding performances in defence and midfield. So by the end of the night all involved could breathe a sigh of relief with all noses, taxi doors and the majority of reputations remaining intact. Here's a full list of winners and riders

The Saigon Saints recently took part in the Bayon Challenge International Football Tournament held in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Pehn. The Saints fielded a close to full strength squad in what can only be described as less than ideal conditions, however despite this they produced some of their best football played all season. In keeping with the rest of their campaign the Saints were short of luck on the pitch, despite star performances by Japanese playmaker Naoki the team found themselves on the end of some disappointing results eventually going out the French team of Bangkok. The tournament brought an end to a disapointing season, in which at the start had held so much promise. The Saints now take a break prior to the start of the new season in August where they again begin an assualt on the league championship, in the hope of some long-awaited silverwear.

In the heat of the stifling Bangkok sun the Vietnam Reunited team (comprising mainly of past/present Saigon Saints & ex Hanoi Capitals players) bowed out of the Bangkok German All-stars tournament after a bravely fought 3-1 defeat to the host team. The much-depleted Reunited finished 3rd in the group of five, notching up 2 wins and 2 defeats leaving them to fight for the plate rather than the cup on this occasion. Thanks to all involved for the organising and taking part.

Ruby Murrys in Saigon. June 18th 2007
Hong Kong league and cup champions The Ruby's were guests of the Saints in HCMC last weekend. They played two games in great spirit. After very nearly drinking the city dry on Friday night they took on the Saints in the sweltering Saturday afternoon heat. On Sunday challenged a SIFL representative squad featuring players from Raiders, Japan, Olympique, and from the Saints: Christo, Sneaky, Gary, Eli, with Raffa directing the whole show. It finished a very diplomatic 1-1. It was a pleasure to entertain true gentlemen for the weekend. Mao, Raffa, and Matty must be lauded for organizing.

Saints in 4th EuroCham 6's. June 2nd 2007
DHL took home the trophy and very much deserved every second of the glory. Their well assembled professional players cruised through the whole contest beating France in the final. The Ireland team reached the semi finals and featured Matt, John Gavin, John Marron, Dino and Ganners. Lucas lead the Spanish team. Edwin the Dutch. The woeful English team: Scott, Dave, Jono, Raffa, Alan, Rob were on the turps by midday. For the most part an enjoyable day out.

Vietnam Reunited 2007, GAS tournament, Bangkok. April 9th.
Past and Present stars of Saigon Saints and Hanoi Capitals joined forces as Vietnam Reunited at the 25th annual competition in Thailand. The quality at the disposal of management team, our own Chris and the Capital's Mike, was quickly evident; stubborn defending, slick passing and devastating finishing. Reunited disposed of some well known opposition on the way to the semi finals where they were undone, against the run of play, by eventual winners, the hosts German All Stars. It was another memorable trip. Great fun off and on the pitch. Well done Chairman Maorridge for putting it together.

Where Legends meet. March 6th 2007
Sir Bobby Charlton's visit to Ho Chi Minh, resulted in an oportunity for Sir Bobby to mix with 3 legends of the Ho Chi Minh football scene, Chopper Hopkins, The Curse Lovell and Raffa Honour. Bobby's speach included many anecdotes from his illustrious career from his early days at Manchester Utd and the glory days with England in 1966. When the time for questions came Sir Bobby looked out into the audience for a suitable candidate "What about the lad with the same haircut as me", up steps The Curse Lovell to ask Sir Bobby how the Man Utd team of 68 compared with the mighty Liverpool teams of 77, 78, 81 and 84, ever the diplomat Sir Bobby refused to compare the sides, just letting everyone know how difficult it was and is to win The European Cup / Champions League. All in all a very entertaining night and great to see one of the English games all time greats in town.

The new year brought with it the end of our beloved Bar5. The good news is that the Grand Colonial building at 43 Mac Dinh Chi which will be the new Bar5 is just months away from completion and promises to be bigger and better than it's predecessor. Narafu Memorial game
To remember Narafu, Saigon Japan's Captain who died tragically of Dengue. Japan Vs. Rest of the world has been pencilled in for Sunday January 7th. A game of football in his honour seems appropriate for someone who loved the game so much. Each team from the league will nominate 3 players to play. The venue is to be confirmed but it is hoped that players from all clubs will come together to remember him and watch the game. Beers and snacks will be available.

Some terrible news. Dec 12th 2006
Tragically, Narafu the captain of Saigon Japan died recently of a hemorrhage related to Dengue Fever, he was only 31. As you can imagine Kotani and the rest of the Japanese team and supporters are all devastated. On behalf of Saigon Saints, manager Chris Honour, passed his deepest sympathy to the Japanese team through their manger Kotani. Talk of a memorial match has been put aside whilst Saigon Japan FC have space in this difficult time. The expat football community will remember Narafu for his talent and as gentleman who loved the game. Kotani put it best "too young to leave the pitch"

One of the clubs biggest characters said farewell on Saturday. Mike Clifford will be irreplaceable for ripping up the right wing and his fish out of water impressions at left back. Although infamous for his Tequila drinking and Ring of Fire outbursts he'll be most remembered for his goal of the season Vs. Korea back in January. Wow, what an awesome weekend, I think its fair to say that everyone had a great time on and off the pitch. Congraulations to Italians everywhere (esp. Michel) on winning their 4th World Cup. Fantastic that Football has won through for the Italian players and fans. Saints in 3rd EuroCham 6's. May 27th at RMIT
Saigon Saints were well represented in this years EuroCham tournament. The United Kindom team were losing finalists, featuring Jono, Dan, Scott and Rob, their highlight was beating the Swiss 10-1 in the semi final. Ireland starring Max, John Marron and Matt reached the semi finals, nice work given they had put together the team in about 48 hours. Paco, Freddie and Jakub turned in spirited displays for the Spanish team and Edwin kept goal for the Dutch. Congratulations to the returning Saint Oyvind, Raiders Captain Brian and the rest of the Scandinavian team, deserved winners for the 2nd year in a row.

Awards Night
The end of our 2005/06 season, the most successful in the clubs history, was marked by the annual awards party. A fantastic occasion with a good dose of fun & laugher and acknowledgment & praise. Celebrations continued long in to the night.
